Max is part Collie, part Elkhound and part German Shepherd. He is the sweetest and most gentle dog on earth but he scares everyone with his mini colllie mane that stands up when he is frightened and his very loud bark. Max wouldn't hurt a fly and that was evidenced one day when he caught one in his mouth and kept spitting it out and picking it back up. He never tried to eat it, he just wanted to examine it. Alas, the poor fly must have drowned on his slobber and once it stopped moving, Max sighed and walked away from it.
His intelligence is amazing. He learned words very quickly and it got to a point that we couldn't even spell T-R-E-A-T. If he heard T-R, he would run to the cupboard before we would spell the rest of it.
Just after a heavy snow one winter, the kids wanted to sled down our sloping back yard. Since our yard wasn't fenced in at the time, we would let Max go out on a long chain and then bring him back inside when he was ready. This wintery day, we kept him in because the kids were sleding right where his chain was.
As you can imagine, Max was wanting to be outside with the kids and so there was a lot of whining and high pitched barking. Eventually it became unbearable so I opened a window and told the kids that he was coming out. Each of the children had their own sled and Tammy was bending over about to get on hers when Max ran up from behind and knocked her down and immediately jumped on the sled and rode it down the hill until he came to the end of the chain and was knocked off the sled. You can imagine our surprise when he dragged the sled to the top of the slope and jump back on it to ride down! Even more of a surprise was that he jumped off before the chain ran out and grabbed the sled and repeated the process!
If I wouldn't have captured it on camera, I wouldn't have believed it either.
